Treatment for Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis, is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when cartilage in your joints wears down over time. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in your body, although it is most commonly affects the hands, hips, knees and spine. Has the treatment for Osteoarthritis changed over the years?

I am answering this as a straight question about osteoarthritis and not about what you may or may not have. There have been improvements in the medications used for osteoarthritis over the last few years. The first is the over the counter use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. This in someways has made life easier for those who suffer from this ailment. The next is the more limited use of steroids instead of the constant use of them. There have been some excellent relief obtained with the use of supplements such as fish oils, glucosamine, as well as others. Perhaps the most important aspect of all is the idea that one should now use the joints and support them rather then having them avoid use. For backs and knees the loss of weight has made significant differences in their lives. Exercise and a positive attitude as so important. There are going to be good days, bad days, and some days in between but over all things are getting better.
